The dowty retarder is a small independent hydraulic device installed on the waist of the rail, which can automatically reduce the rolling speed of the vehicle. The sliding cylinder and the shell are two parts of dowty retarder.
The word dowdy is taken from the name of Dowty mining equipment Ltd. First, it was developed by P.E. Checkley, chief engineer of the railway department of the British dowdy company. It was originally installed in two marshalling yards of Tinsley and Bescot on British Rail. A speed valve is installed in the sliding cylinder, which can automatically determine whether the speed of the vehicle exceeds the critical speed value; a pressure valve is installed to absorb the kinetic energy of the vehicle.
Each dowty retarder has a critical speed value. When the vehicle speed is higher than this value, the retarder will play a brake role, otherwise it will not play a brake role. T-dj 302 dowty retarder with critical speed of 1.25m/s, made in China, consumes 932j for each brake.
