The dowty retarder was first invented by the British George Dowty, and is a hydraulic device used to control vehicle speed in the marshalling station hump speed regulation system. Divided into two parts of the housing and the oil cylinder (piston).
The earliest domestic research and development of dowty retarder is the Harbin Railway Bureau deceleration speed regulation system research center. After decades of development, the domestic dowty retarder has formed three categories of products: controllable dowty retarder, parking dowty retarder and acceleration dowty retarder.
Speed control systems with dowty retarder as equipment include: point-connected speed control system, continuous speed control system, reverse slope speed control system, rear parking system of marshalling yard. Among them, the continuous speed control system can also be subdivided into: hump full dowty retarderspeed control system, stock road top full speed control system, and microcomputer controllable top speed control system.
