Development history of dowty retarder

The hump continuous speed control equipment, the dowty retarder, is a kind of hydraulic unit which can simply and easily control the speed of hump vehicles without external energy and external control.

This new type of speed control equipment was first developed by dowdy company in the mid-1960s. It has been installed and used in marshalling yards around the world for nearly 30 years. In China, it has been more than 20 years since the first generation of domestic dowty retarder was successfully developed in 1974. For more than 20 years, the dowty retarder and its speed control technology have been rapidly developed and widely used because of its advantages such as less investment, quick effect, high safety and reliability, no need of external energy and external control equipment, high degree of automation and simple maintenance.

At present, more than 70 railway marshalling stations in China have applied nearly 300000 retarders of various types, becoming the country with the largest number of dowty retarder in the world. China's dowty retarder and its speed control technology have reached or exceeded the international advanced level in terms of basic theory and application research, product variety and scheme design, and have made positive contributions to the rapid development of China's railway marshalling station modernization.
